Superfood for acne-free skin

Acne free skinWant clear, luminous, acne-free skin? There’s a superfood for that – lots of them, actually. And while eating tons of nutrient-dense fruits, seeds, and algae is always going to do your body (and face) good, these beauty boosters can be just as powerful when applied topically.

Just about any skin type can benefit from these nutritional powerhouses — the trick is to look for the superfoods that specifically address your needs. If you’re in need of something anti-inflammatory, reach for the turmeric, while for an anti-microbial boost search for products with spirulina, for example.

Superfood that’s proven to be great for preventing acne:

  • Natural yoghurt – you will heard this a billion times before that yoghurt has a lot of probiotics, and probiotics are great for your skin, digestive system, and bloat control. But this is not exactly helpful if you’re lactose intolerant. Never fear!  Yoghurt can also be used topically to treat acne, as yogurt contains natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
  • Oatmeal – this food is low on the glycemic index – a scale that rates foods containing carbohydrates according to how much each food increases blood sugar – because it lowers blood sugar, reduces inflammation which can cause acne breakouts.
  • Miso – for those who are lactose intolerant, miso is a great replace for yoghurt with the same gut-friendly bugs. So try miso instead as an acne-fighting superfood!

  • Artichokes – this oft-misunderstood green in the veggie section is often overlooked in the shopping basket.  Artichokes contain the flavonoid silymarin, an antioxidant that can protect the liver and help clear acne-prone skin.  Paired with spinach (see below), this superfood combination will help keep acne at bay.
  • Spinach – is loaded with Vitamin K and zinc, which has been shown to reduce inflammation and help prevent acne breakouts. Spinach and other leafy greens such as collard greens and kale also contains zeaxanthin which is a naturally-occurring antioxidant that protects skin and helps even out skin tone.

Tip: Simply rub a dab of the creamy yogurt onto acne-prone areas. Rinse it off after 30 minutes. A regular beauty regime with a yogurt facial mask will help keep skin cleansed, which will also reduce irritating breakouts.
